Broadband for gaming: does ping matter more than speed?

Most advice about broadband for gaming hands you a number of megabits and stops there. That is why so many people upgrade, wait in for the engineer, and find the game feels exactly as it did before. Speed and responsiveness are not the same thing. Games care about the second one almost to the exclusion of the first, which is why the megabits keep disappointing people. Here is what decides whether a match feels sharp or soupy, how to measure your own, and the honest limit of what changing provider can do about it.

What actually makes a game feel laggy?

Delay, not a shortage of bandwidth. Three numbers describe it, and none of them is the one on the advert.

  • Ping, or latency. How long a message takes to reach the game server and come back, measured in milliseconds. This is the one that decides whether the shot you took registers where you aimed it.
  • Jitter. How much that figure wobbles from one moment to the next. A connection that varies wildly feels worse than a slower one that is consistent, because the game cannot predict it.
  • Packet loss. Messages that never arrive at all. This is what produces the rubber banding, where your character snaps back to where it was a second ago.

A film in 4K needs a wide pipe. A competitive shooter needs a punctual one. The two requirements barely overlap, and a package sold on the first says almost nothing about the second.

Does broadband for gaming need to be fast?

Fast enough, yes. Faster than that, no. Once your line has the capacity for what the household is actually doing, buying more of it does not shorten the journey your data takes. Doubling your download speed does not halve your ping, and no honest comparison site should imply otherwise.

There is one real exception, and it catches a lot of people. If your connection is genuinely saturated, typically by somebody uploading a large file or a backup running in the background, a queue forms and everything else waits behind it. Your ping can climb sharply while that happens. More headroom does fix that, and so does a router clever enough to keep the queue short.

Where the delay actually comes from

Your ping is the sum of four separate journeys, and only two of them are anything to do with the company you pay:

  • Your device to the router. On wifi this is often the largest avoidable chunk, and the biggest source of jitter. On a cable it is close to nothing.
  • Your router to the network. The access technology matters here, which is where full fibre earns its reputation.
  • Across the network to wherever the server lives. Distance is physics. Nobody sells a package that beats it.
  • The game server itself. How busy it is, and how well the game is coded, are entirely outside your control and are more often the culprit than people assume.

Work down that list in order. The problem is usually solved long before you reach the part your provider owns, which is inconvenient if you were hoping to blame them.

What full fibre changes, and what it does not

Full fibre generally gives lower and steadier latency than the older copper-based connections, because the signal does not spend part of its journey on a copper pair between a street cabinet and your house. This is a measured property rather than marketing: Ofcom records latency alongside download and upload speed in its home broadband performance research, and full fibre consistently comes out lowest.

Now the part the adverts leave out. Full fibre shortens one leg of the journey, the shortest one. It does nothing about a server on another continent, nothing about a game having a bad night, and nothing at all about your wifi. If you are playing over a wireless connection from an upstairs bedroom, the new line will improve the number your speed test reports and may not change how the game feels one bit.

Whether full fibre is even an option is a street by street question rather than a town by town one, so the only reliable answer comes from checking your own address. How do you test your own ping?

Run a speed test that reports ping and jitter as well as download, from a computer plugged into the router with an ethernet cable. That gives you the line at its best, with your wifi taken out of the picture. Then run the same test over wifi from where you actually play, and compare the two.

Better still, use the game itself. Most competitive titles show a live ping figure or a network graph somewhere in the settings, and that reads the real server rather than a test server chosen for being nearby. Watch it across a whole session instead of glancing once. A figure that sits still is good news even if it is not especially low. A figure that spikes every few seconds is the one to chase.

Do some of this between about eight and ten in the evening, when the network is busiest and the household is all online at once. Write the numbers down with the date and time. The fixes worth trying, cheapest first

  • Plug in. An ethernet cable to the console or PC removes more lag and far more jitter than any package upgrade. If running a cable is impractical, a pair of powerline adapters is usually still better than wifi.
  • Move the router, or use the 5GHz band. Out of the cupboard, off the floor, and away from the microwave. The faster band gives up sooner through walls, so it suits a device in the same room.
  • Stop the household competing. A cloud backup, a console updating itself or somebody uploading video will all sit in front of your game in the queue. Schedule the big jobs for overnight.
  • Look at the router itself. Some support smart queueing, sold under names like QoS, which keeps small time-sensitive messages moving while a large transfer runs. Whether you can swap the box at all varies by network, which our guide on using your own router goes through.
  • Only then change your connection. It is the slowest and most expensive move on this list, and it is the right one only once the first four have been ruled out.

Upload is worth a thought before you shop, too. If you stream what you play, sit in voice chat all evening or share a house with somebody doing either, upload capacity does real work, and it is the figure the headline never mentions. What your provider actually promises

Not a ping figure. Providers signed up to Ofcom's voluntary codes of practice on broadband speeds have to give you a minimum guaranteed download speed before you buy, and if the speed falls below it and they cannot fix the problem within 30 days of you reporting it, you can leave without paying an exit fee, along with any phone or TV bundled with it.

Read that as what it is. The promise is expressed as a download speed, so poor responsiveness on its own does not trigger it, however genuinely miserable the games are. It is still worth knowing your guaranteed figure, because a slow line often turns out to be behind both complaints at once, and that is the version of the argument a provider is obliged to engage with.

The blunt summary is this. Broadband for gaming is mostly a home networking job with a small connectivity job attached, and the order in which you tackle them decides whether you spend twenty pounds or two hundred. Cable first, router second, provider last.

Will a gaming router fix lag?

It can help with one specific cause and does nothing for the rest. A better router with sensible queueing stops a big upload elsewhere in the house from delaying your traffic, which is a real problem and a common one. It cannot shorten the distance to the game server, and it cannot improve a line that is already struggling.

Is a wired connection really better than wifi for gaming?

Yes, and it is usually the single biggest improvement available to you. Wifi adds delay and, more importantly, adds variation in that delay, which is what causes the sudden jerks rather than a steady lag. An ethernet cable from the console or PC to the router removes that whole category of problem for the price of the cable.

Does 5G home broadband work for gaming?

It can be perfectly playable, and it is less predictable than a fixed line. Signal strength, how busy the local mast is and where the router sits in the house all move the figure around during an evening. If your games are slow-paced it may never bother you. If you play anything where timing decides the outcome, a fixed line is the safer bet.

Can I leave my contract because my ping is bad?

Not on its own. The guarantee providers give you under the speed codes of practice is a minimum download speed, and a disappointing ping is not the same thing.
