Does an internet booster fix slow wifi?

An internet booster is the first thing most people buy when the wifi in one room is hopeless, and it is very often the wrong purchase made for entirely the right reason. A booster can carry a signal further into a house. It cannot invent speed that never arrived at the front door in the first place. Which of those two problems you actually have decides whether the money is well spent or completely wasted, and it takes about ten minutes to find out.
What does an internet booster actually do?
It takes the wifi signal your router is already producing, picks it up part way across the house, and rebroadcasts it so it reaches further than the router manages alone. That is the whole job. It never touches the line coming into your property, the package you pay for, or the speed your provider sends you.
The useful way to picture it is someone standing halfway down the garden repeating what you shouted rather than a megaphone making you louder. The message gets further. Nothing new was ever said.
Will an internet booster make my broadband faster?
No. It can make a distant room go from unusable to fine, which feels exactly like more speed, but the amount of broadband arriving at your home does not change.
That is the distinction worth holding on to, because it splits the problem cleanly in two. A booster is worth buying for a dead corner, a bedroom that drops video calls, a garden office at the end of the lawn, a top floor the router cannot reach through two ceilings. It is worth nothing at all for a connection that crawls in every room, sags every evening at eight, or has never once hit the figure on the bill. Same box. Completely different outcome.
Boosters, extenders, repeaters and mesh
The words get used interchangeably in the shops, which does not help anyone. Roughly:
- Booster, extender and repeater. All the same idea. One plug-in unit that relays your existing router's signal. The cheapest way in, and the one with the most compromises.
- Powerline adapter. A pair of plugs that sends the connection through your mains wiring and puts out wifi at the far end. Often the better answer in a solid old house, because it goes around the walls rather than through them.
- Mesh. A set of units sold together and designed as a single network, so devices move between them without dropping. More expensive, considerably better, and increasingly what providers hand out as a whole-home add-on.
Why a cheap booster can make things worse
A basic extender has one radio doing two jobs. It has to listen to your router and talk to your laptop using the same radio, so it takes turns, and roughly half the capacity disappears in the relaying alone. Test one properly and you will often find the far room has gone from unusable to workable while a room nearer the router has quietly got slower.
Two other things catch people out. A dual-band unit avoids most of that loss by keeping one band for talking to the router and the other for talking to your devices, so the price difference between the cheapest box and the next one up is buying something real. And a badly placed extender is worse than none, because phones cling stubbornly to a weak signal they have already found instead of reconnecting to the strong one across the hall. Halfway between the router and the problem room is the rule, not inside the problem room.
What to try before you buy anything
Some of this is free and a surprising amount of it works. Ofcom's own wifi advice starts in the same place any engineer would.
- Move the router. Central, off the floor, out of the cupboard under the stairs. Wifi weakens through anything solid, and brick, water and metal are the worst of it.
- Keep it away from the interference. Microwaves, cordless phones, baby monitors and fish tanks all sit between your router and the rest of the house more effectively than they look.
- Wire anything that never moves. A television, a console or a desktop on an ethernet cable takes itself out of the competition entirely, and frees the airtime for everything else.
- Check how old the router is. A box that came with a contract five years ago is working to an older standard, and on some networks you are free to replace it.

When the problem is not the wifi at all
Run one speed test on a computer plugged into the router with a cable. If that result is close to what you pay for, your line is healthy and a booster is a fair fix. If the wired result is also poor, no booster on the market will help you, and the problem belongs to your provider rather than to your house.

So what is worth buying?
For one awkward corner in an otherwise fine house, a dual-band extender or a powerline pair placed properly is enough, and it is the cheapest thing here by a wide margin. For a long house, a converted loft, thick internal walls or three floors, mesh is the honest answer and the single extender will disappoint you.
