The first Wi-Fi 8 routers are here, running on an unfinished standard

The first Wi-Fi 8 kit for homes has been announced, and the standard behind it is not due to be finished until May 2028. TP-Link used IFA in Berlin to launch what its own announcement calls the world’s first complete Wi-Fi 8 lineup, led by the Archer 8 Ultra router and the Deco 8 Ultra mesh system. Pre-orders open on 30 September, the router should ship in October, and the mesh follows in the first quarter of 2027. ISPreview reports that the 2028 date comes from the timetable for ratifying the standard itself.
The numbers are big. TP-Link quotes up to 19Gbps of wireless throughput for the Archer and up to 22Gbps for a three piece Deco, alongside 18 internal antennas on the router and 10Gbps wired ports on both. Those are peak theoretical totals, shared across three bands and every device in the house, and ISPreview is careful to note that real world speeds come in many times slower. Nobody measures 19Gbps at home.
Will it make your broadband faster?
For almost every household, no. Wi-Fi 8, formally 802.11bn, is aimed at reliability rather than raw speed: holding a steady connection with a lot of devices in use and at the far corners of a house. That is a real problem worth solving. The trouble is that a router can only pass on what arrives at your door, and the quickest home packages on the networks we track sit a long way below 19Gbps. Even Openreach’s 10Gbps fibre is still working towards a million premises, with one provider selling on it.
The part worth waiting for
TP-Link says several Wi-Fi 8 features are missing from this kit at launch. Some are targeted to arrive by firmware update in the third quarter of 2027, and others not until 2028. That makes this a promise as much as a product, and the reaction under ISPreview’s report was mostly people recalling Wi-Fi 7 hardware sold on features that took years to appear, or never did.
Two things are genuinely unclear. TP-Link quotes the lower 19Gbps figure for the Deco in Europe, because of differences in spectrum rules, and has not said which number a UK model would carry. Neither device has a published UK price, and first generation kit on an unratified standard is rarely the cheap end of the shelf.
